My advice is show willingness and politeness by at least saying ‘Namaste’ as a greeting (can be used to say ‘bye’ too).

And learn how to say ‘No’ too, repeat after me… NA-HEE, NA-HEE, NA-HEE!

7 Money Management Tips For Travel

Travelling and money go hand in hand – if you want to see the world, it’s gonna cost you (although I have some tricks to cut costs HERE). Preparing for my own backpacking trip forced me to check my own bad spending habits and, frankly nonexistent, budgeting skills – so in the spirit of friendship I extend these tips to you.

1. Set a Budget

No matter how much money you have saved, or how little you need to know exactly how much money you have to spend each day. Have this amount seared into your mind. If you go over one day, then pull it back the next and if you are underspending either save that cash for a treat or to extend your trip.

2. Open a New Account

A savings account that you don’t have easy access to is a great thing. I used to have a savings account but as soon as I logged into my internet banking I was able to quickly siphon any funds into my current account. So to save I opened an account with a different bank and didn’t set up online banking for it. I just made sure I paid money INTO it and that’s it. The temptation to cheat was taken away.

3. Pay Yourself a ‘Wage’

From your new account set up a standing order to your current account each week, this will ensure you can’t overspend. If you get your card stolen you won’t get cleared out either. If you don’t have a separate account, give your money to a trusted family member and ask them to send you your ‘wage’ each week.

4. Use a Budgeting App

It’s so easy to blow your budget – a beer here, a tattoo there, several hundred ice creams – so get into the habit of logging your spending. It’s quite addictive and will ensure you stay on track.

5. Take US Dollars

While I don’t recommend getting currency before you leave (use your debit card for good exchange rates, just watch withdrawal fees), it is useful in most countries to have some US dollars with you. It’s the universal money and could get you across borders or out of a pickle. I took about $200 in cash.

6. Get an Extra Card

The last thing you want is to lose a card and be stuck for cash. Take two separate cards and keep them apart so you always have the means to get money out. I have a STA money card too which is prepaid and can be used around the world. I’d recommend getting a credit card if you don’t have one too – only for absolute emergencies, but it’s peace of mind if you have to book a last minute flight.

7. Watch Out For Bank Charges

While I think it’s fine to take cash out of ATMs some banks do charge fees per withdrawal so don’t take out £10 at a time. Try and take most of your cash out a once to save on fees.

If you’re with HSBC like me, here’s the details:

If you use your HSBC debit card to withdraw money at an ATM abroad, there is normally a Non Sterling Cash Fee of 2% (minimum £1.75, maximum £5) for all withdrawals.

Sweden in The Summer by Jamie Jonathan Ball

Jamie Jonathan Ball an artist and children’s book illustrator found a novel way to document his move from the UK to Scandinavia. Using photographs he’s taken as a starting point Jamie has created a series of beautiful illustrations that capture the summer in Stockholm and in various spots on the Aegean coastline.

Jamie Jonathan Ball’s website Little Kingdoms chronicles his twin loves of illustration and travel.

11 Ways To Make Travel Dirt Cheap

Going backpacking or travelling is very costly, no matter how you do it, but you can do things to be thrifty. I know people who have made £1000 last 6 months or a couple of weeks, it all depends on your travel style. So here are a few top tips to save mucho dinero (my Spanish lessons kicking in there, lol) on your trip…

GO EAST

The cheapest places to travel to are in the East (for us Brits at least), that means backpacker favourites Thailand, Cambodia and Laos as well as India. Europe is pretty expensive but Eastern Europe can be cheap – try Serbia, Hungary and Croatia. Places to avoid: Australia, New Zealand and America.

COUCHSURFING

This is a website that connects hosts and travellers from all over the world. You get a free bed or couch for the night – all you have to do is create a profile and pay a subscription fee. Just be sure that your host has good reviews and someone knows where you’re staying.

LAY OFF THE BOOZE

If there’s one surefire way to piss your money away, it’s drinking lots of alcohol. Even though it may be cheaper than at home it can soon add up. Also hangovers make you spend more money as you’re hungry and too lazy to search out a bargain. Try having drink-free days and when you do just enjoy a couple.

WWOOFING

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms or WWOOF is an organisation that has been around since the sixties that allows travellers to work on farms around the world in exchange for a bed and food. Sign up on the WWOOF site of the country you want to visit and find a host. I definitely want to try this as I think it’s such a different experience for a city slicker like me and a chance to see how the locals live. If you do this for a few weeks your expenses could be zero!

TRAVEL AT THE RIGHT TIME

Don’t book your flights in the summer or school holidays, and don’t book your trip right after Christmas as this is when everyone who wants to go backpacking sets off – must be new years resolutions. I postponed my departure date by a month and saved £400.

TAKE BUSES

Or trains, or whatever the local transport – it’s always cheaper. In Asia internal flights are pretty cheap but a train or bus is always cheaper. Besides you always meet more people in less chi chi modes of transport. Avoid taxis and do as the locals do.

WORK ONLINE

Whether you’re a writer, designer or day trader, there are loads of ways you can earn a bit of cash online. As long as you have wifi you can earn a bit of cash. If you blog try RewardStyle to help monetise it and for copywriters there is Textbroker.

STAY IN HOSTELS

Hotels will never be as cheap as hostels, you can get a hostel in Thailand for as little as £3 a night – how crazy! Plus in hostels you’ll meet a lot more people and most of them aren’t as bad as you think. In Australia a hostel averages about £17 a night, a cheap hotel would set you back around £50 – and that’s for the equivalent of a Premier Inn which are boring and you won’t have any fun stuck in a room alone.

Tips for staying in hostels >>>

SWAP WORK FOR FOOD/SHELTER

Hustle baby! Whether it’s helping out on a farm or at a local’s house in exchange for a bed, bartending for drinks or working on the reception desk of your hostel instead of paying the bill – there are so many ways to save some dollars.

READ FOR FREE

I’m assuming you have a Kindle because, you’d be nuts not to (especially on a long trip) and books can be expensive. Here are some Kindle hacks: 1/ you can borrow books from a friend of family members Kindle library, you can only share between two adults so chose your most well-read mate. (Find out how HERE). 2/ Read the classics, all the books you feel you should have read, but haven’t. Most Dickens, Shelley, Bronte and the like are free on your Kindle, and the classics are classic for a reason – they’re great books. 3/ Hit the Top 100 Free Kindle Books list, there’s a lot of amateur erotica on there (that might be your thing) but some really good reads as well.

GET HEALTHY

A healthy lifestyle is way cheaper than an unhealthy one. Walking or cycling instead of cabbing it is not only great exercise but also free (mostly). Cutting out junk food will trim your waistline and your expenses. Swap soda for water. Eat local street food instead of western restaurant food. Plus choose healthy activities to fill your days like hiking or swimming which not only help your fitness but don’t cost anything!

So there you have it, travelling doesn’t have to cost the earth. Follow these tips and you can do it on the cheap and still have fun. Plus when you’re sat on a beach in the sun, as long as you have food and shelter – what more do you need?!

The 7 Emotional Stages of Packing

Packing was invented by Satan to provide him with much entertainment from confused backpackers and holidaymakers – like why does everything fit in when you first pack, then once you’ve taken it out and try to re-pack it doesn’t? Anyway it’s a necessary evil so let’s go though the 7 emotional steps we all experience:

1. Totally Nonchalant

I have months and months to pack. I’m not even going to think about it – I mean as long as I have some cash and a sexy bikini I’m golden, right!?

2. Lets Do Some Research

*Spends 11 hours straight on travel blogs* Okayyyy, so I might need more than a bikini… what’s a microfibre towel? I need an adapter or 10 as well…

img_6177

3. Sh*t!!!!!!!!

I have nothing! Nothing. Nothinggggggggg… Why have I been so stupid? I need a torch, a headscarf, a sleeping bag, a 10 week supply of malaria tablets and a crochet dress.

4. Shopping is Fun

*Amazon basket full of everything from penknifes to pop up tents*

5. Sh*t!!!!!!

I’m spending a lot of money. Maybe I don’t need the cutlery set, spare laptop battery and GoPro with all the accessories. I could also leave the guidebooks.

6. I Should Have My Own Packing TV Show

Or at least a YouTube channel… I’m like, so good at this. Everything is so neat, everything is functional, I’ve got all the necessities and I’ll still look good, I’m a geni… oh wait, I can’t lift this bag. Nothing fits! I can’t go through this again…

7. What Will Be Will Be

F*ck it. I’ve got my Passport, and I’m bored of packing now.

So there you have it. Pack savvy with my amazing packing guides:

The Perfect Carry-On Packing List

Your carry-on luggage is super important and it should be treated as such. Your bag needs to be organised and contain all your desert island items. I know everyone has different needs and priorities, so pack to reflect that. This is my carry-on but I hope it helps you to pack yours…

6 Alternatives to a ‘Beach Body’

The term ‘beach body’ has had a lot of bad press recently. It all started last summer with Protein World’s bikini-clad campaign and culminated in Women’s Health banning the phrase. Now, I don’t know why that particular ad started the backlash, because it’s something anyone who has ever bought any women’s magazine ever will have seen a million times before.

In and of itself, the saying ‘beach body’ is not offensive at all, but the expectation that all us mere mortals should be 5’10”, beach blonde, long-legged, big-titted, with an ass like Kim Kardashian, abs like Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston arms is so overwhelmingly unachievable. Not to mention we all need to have completely hairless bodies, with no excess fat (except on the aforementioned ass and tits) the colour of molten gold that don’t sweat… enough already.

Lets’s look our bests, yes, but in an inclusive, mentally healthy way. With that in mind, here are my six alternatives to that impossible ‘beach body’.

1. A HUGE F*CKING SMILE

This is so cliché and I hate myself for saying this, but it’s so true, nothing is more attractive on a woman (or man) than a big, genuine smile. Forget the duck faces, ‘sultry’ looks and pouting – a sunny grin is so much more beautiful.

Plus size model Naomi Shimida is the perfect example of this, she doesn’t have your typical model rail-thin frame, she’s a curvy girl – and stunning with it! She always sports a massive smile and she looks so much prettier than the person who is miserable because they’re after that ‘beach bod’ and failing.

2. TONS OF ENERGY

The beach is a great place, isn’t it? You can play frisbee, swim in the sea and generally just lark around. Unless you’re too concerned with topping up your tan, avoiding sweaty activities or too weak from your pre-holiday diet that is. Use the sun’s rays to re-energise yourself and play!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Playing games in the sea won’t make you look cool and I hate this photo, but you will have fun!

3. SKIN THAT GLOWS, FROM WITHIN

There is no foundation, concealer, bronzer, highlighter or contour kit that is better or more effective than a healthy diet and stress-free life. Instead of focussing on the outside, think of your body as your most precious possession – feed it well. Think of that piece of fruit or veg as a well-deserved treat. Eat the rainbow. Drink water and not diet fizzy pop.

Simply forget about what you look like and respect your body and do you know what? You’ll look a million times better. It’s easy. Clear, fresh (makeup free) skin is so pretty – show it off.

MOROCCO 516

Not the thinnest, not the prettiest, but lovely glowing skin!

4. A BODY THAT FEELS STRONG

Punishing yourself at the gym in order to lose a few pounds or emulate Beyoncé’s backside isn’t the way to do it. Like eating well, working out shouldn’t be a punishment, it should be something you do to enable your body to work well.

I’ve been every size from a UK 6 (US 2) to a big UK 12 (US 8) and I can honestly say I was happiest somewhere in the middle, at my natural weight. Being super svelte was hard work, I never ate and only exercised to burn calories, so I didn’t enjoy it. Ironically, I was much fitter when I was fatter because I was working out and running for the sheer joy of it and eating nutritious and delicious things (quite a lot of them, but ‘whatevs’) instead of low calorie diet products. There is no better feeling than knowing you can leg-it up a hill, swim for miles and carry your own heavy bags because your body is happy and strong, trust me.

Not thin but I can out-swim you 🙂

5. A BIG DOSE OF ‘I DON’T CARE’

As Carrie Fisher put so eloquently;

“Youth and beauty are not accomplishments”

We need to stop comparing ourselves to models and reality TV stars whose JOB it is to look good. And *newsflash* a lot of these beautiful, picture perfect women in the media are either incredibly young (hi Kylie Jenner), just happened to win the genetic lottery, or in the case of Victoria’s Secret Angels get PAID to train and eat like athletes to attain near God-like bodies.

You my friend, as I am, are a mere mortal fighting against your natural body shape, face and hair. You have a normal job, responsibilities and life – no one cares what you look like. It is not your job to compete with Candice Swanepoel or some 15 year old Instagram star.

Stop caring about what you and others around you look like, and focus on having so much fun you could explode. On that note, some things that are sooo much more valuable than beauty: intellect, kindness, generosity, a dirty laugh, the ability to tell a tall tale, killer dance moves… I could go on.

6. DIVERSITY RULES!

I harp on about this a lot, because growing up as a mixed race girl in Leeds there were literally no women of colour in the media – they were all exclusively white and blonde. This made me feel hideous because I was taught to believe that fitting into that narrow beauty ideal was the only way to be attractive. Even my mum was a white, blonde (and very gorgeous) woman so I truly hated my looks. I used to pray I would turn white and my hair would lighten. At school I once got passed over by a boy (who wasn’t all that) because ‘he didn’t like black girls’.

pammy body 90s

Pammy was the ideal of the 90s: thin, blonde, pneumatic breasts… what a stunner though.

Thankfully things have changed a lot now, I always say Beyoncé and J.Lo saved my life because they were the first women in the media heralded for their unique looks. Suddenly brown skin, thick thighs and a booty were in. YASSS! When I think of all the world’s most beautiful women now (Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Jourdan Dunn, Chrissy Teigen) they are all so different and it makes me so happy.

beautiful healthy beach babesbeyonce rihanna

All these gorgeous women look happy, healthy and confident!

Don’t get me wrong, while in terms of colour and ethnicity the world has moved on leaps and bounds, female conventions of beauty are still incredibly narrow. Only by us all embracing and celebrating our differences will things change more.

I have no boobs but a pretty good stomach, a great bum but thunderous thighs – so what do I do? I don’t mention the bad bits and flaunt my fab bits in everyone’s faces. You might have super long legs, nut-brown skin or firey red hair, whatever your USP is, shout it from the rooftops!

What do you think about the term ‘beach body’ and what are your tips for feeling confident on the beach?

Last note, this is a quote from Tina Fey’s book Bossypants about what attributes women are now expected to have. Funny but true.

Backpacker Beauty: The Ultimate Edit

We must first discard any wild notions of looking like Kim Kardashian on the beach. This is impractical and will not happen. You will look more like Helena Bonham Carter in Harry Potter (or indeed Helena Bonham Carter in anything). And that’s okay, come to terms with that. While accepting a more low-key look is important, obviously there are a few beauty tips and tricks to ensure you make the most of your natural beauty while travelling…

MY FAILSAFE KIT

You only need a small, teeny makeup kit I have detailed every single product right HERE. As for the rest take multitasking products and lots of sunscreen. Other amazing products are:

My travel makeup kit – less than 15 items!

THINK SKINCARE NOT MAKEUP

Again, makeup in 40 degree heat is as much use as an ashtray on a speedboat. That shiz is gonna slide off your face like oil so focus of healthy glowing skin. You get good skin by eating well, drinking lots and lots of water and protecting your skin (especially your face) with a high SPF. If you need a little help a highlighter or shimmer cream can give you a J.Lo glow. I like Topshop Chameleon (HERE).

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

A FEW UNIVERSAL TRUTHS

  • You can never have a high enough SPF, lab tests for sunscreen use up to 3x what the average consumer would put on, so that factor 15 is actually a Factor 5. Sunscreen doesn’t stop you tanning at all, it stops your skin cells getting damaged so go for a Factor 35 or above. Read skin safety 101.
  • Too much makeup looks plain weird on holiday/on the beach/while travelling so don’t be tempted to slap it all on. Natural beauty is much cooler.
  • No one actually cares what you look like, just make the best of yourself. As long as you’re clean and don’t look knackered it’s all good. Read eating healthy on the road.
  • Smelling yummy is always good idea. Take something that you like – a small perfume, a scented lotion or your fave conditioner. Or try a solid perfume.

PREPARATION IS KEY

It’s all about sorting things out before you head off into the sun. If your bingo wings are bugging you, start pumping some weights a few weeks before you leave – ditto any other body part that is bugging you. Get a haircut or trim. Get your nails did. Get a wax. I got my eyebrows tattooed on… best decision ever, it means I can swim and sweat to my heart’s content without losing a drawn on eyebrow. Make sure you feel on fleek (as the kids say, or do they? Has it changed now?!) before you go.

BEAUTY ISN’T ONLY SKIN DEEP

Whenever you’re on any beach or indeed any in room, street or country there will be some hotties that make you feel like Lena Dunham in this #squad lineup.

lena-dunham_0

When your squad are all supermodels…

But you know what, Lena Dunham is the girl I’d most like to chill with. She’s the funniest and most intelligent and that’s an accomplishment. Gigi, Lily and Selena, while lovely, just got born hot. Lucky beeyatchs, they didn’t have to do anything. I think that what makes someone beautiful is their past, their passions, their sense of humour and all the stuff that you can’t see. Looks don’t reflect what’s inside – some people just get born beautiful, it’s a genetic lottery…  but everyone, regardless of what’s on the outside can create their own unique beauty. This TED Talks on looks is well worth watching.

So in summary, SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN, be happy and healthy and don’t sweat your appearance too much. XX

Almost Time to Go? Get Your Affairs in Order

So you’ve booked your flights, paid them off, saved some cash and waited what seems like a lifetime. Suddenly the time is almost upon you and you’ve got a couple of weeks to get your shit in order.

This can be pretty overwhelming, realising you actually have quite a few things to sort out before your trip, so here is a list of things you need to do so you can chill once you’re at your destination.

PACK

This might sound obvy but pack EVERYTHING in good time, you can always unpack if there are things you’ll need to use but pack up everything you plan to take in your backpack or suitcase to see if it fits. Also to see if you can carry it. If you can’t then at least you have time to edit. Also launder any clothes that need to laundered and purchase anything on your list that you don’t have yet.

Read my packing list>>>

GROOM

Give yourself an epic grooming session before you leave so you can chill out for the first few weeks at least. This means getting a haircut or trim, waxing or shaving, getting your nails done – or whatever it is you need to feel groomed. Don’t leave booking appointments ’til the last minute or you may be left disappointed.

CANCEL

Cancel your Graze subscription, your gym membership, your Netflix, anything you’re not going to be using that may take money out of your bank account. With things like mobile phone contracts this can (sadly) be a loooong process, with you on hold for ages. Some things are as simple as going online and ticking a box. Make sure you cancel, cancel, cancel so you don’t waste any money.

TECH

Firstly check all your chargers work, replace if necessary. Work out your storage needs, do you have spare SD cards for your camera, external storage for photos. Are you taking a laptop or a tablet? Do you need to de-frag or delete old files from it? Have you got a travel adapter (no matter how many times I go away I always seem to forget this)? Have you sorted out your email inbox, unsubscribe from newsletters and spam, send things straight to junk – if you’re like me and you get 100s of emails a day, it might be worth setting up a new one just for travelling so your friends and family can email you without getting lost in an overflowing inbox.

HEALTH

Aside from vaccinations, which you should already have had, start eating well now. The last thing you want is to come down with a cold before you leave or to feel sluggish and unfit. Start taking a multivitamin. If you need any medication while you’re away, sort that out ASAP. As for injections there IS still time, you might just have to have a lot of needles in one day but it’s not worth risking your health and travelling unprotected. Also get a mini first aid kit together too (just ibuprofen, plasters and antiseptic cream – maybe some stomach sachets) to use while you’re away.

Read pre-travel health check>>>

It can be overwhelming when your departure dat draws closer but just remember as long as you have your passport and some money all is fine. Also LISTS, lists are good, lists help. Start ticking yours off now.
