5 Books to Read on Your Holiday

I recently had a dreamy three weeks in Bali (read all about that HERE) and the first thing I did when I was holiday planning was compile a reading list. That’s honestly one of the best things about going on holiday, reading, it’s such a luxury to be able to get lost in a good book. To be honest at home I just don’t have the time, and if I do crack open a good book in bed I’ll be fast asleep before I’ve even turned a page. So yeah, holidays are my chance to devour a few good novels. These are the five I managed to get through this time around and I was so pleased that I loved all of them – it’s great when you pick winners though not always the case. Anyway… read on to see what I’ve been reading and to add them to your list.

The Regulars by Georgia Clark

You know how they say ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’? Well, I did, I bought this book because I liked the millennial pink cover. This is even weirder considering I got the Kindle version… Anyway, The Regulars is the perfect holiday read, and poses the question ‘what would you do if you were more beautiful?’. I don’t want to give anything away but this is a tale of three girlfriends navigating careers and relationships in NYC with a magical twist. I was hooked from page one and it’s a really interesting subject that plays on every girl’s deepest, darkest desires.

The Muse by Jessie Burton

I loved Jesse Burton’s first novel The Miniaturist and The Muse is, dare I say, even better. It’s set in the ‘30s and the ‘60s and follows two female protagonists connected via a mysterious painting. There’s a genuine sense of mystery as to the origins of the painting and why it was lost to history and you’ll be guessing how the plot fits together until the very end. I really liked that the main character was a black female in London – I can identify, haha.

The Power by Naomi Alderman

The Power is a book that scared me a little, and I don’t scare easily. The premise is this: what would happen if women ruled the world? In the near future teenage girls start developing a power, where they can shoot lightening out of their hands. This novel flips traditional gender roles on their heads and shines a light on some of the inequalities and stereotypes both men and women face. A real page-turner that makes you think.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

Okay, warning, this book made me cry – no, weep. It is the saddest book in the history of all the world and just amazing. This isn’t actually a new book for me, I first read it a couple of years ago and knew that I’d have to revisit it. The book is a beast, it’s so long, but unsurprising when the writer lovingly chronicles almost the entire lives of the four main characters. Jude is the star of the book and you’ll keep reading to find out just what happened in his past. Read once and you’ll never forget this amazing book.

The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

The Nest is a bloody good debut novel that I really hope gets made into a TV series – it would be so great. It follows the Plumb family, a wealthy New York brood of four adult kids with one hell of a dysfunctional family dynamic. The characters and the relationships between each of them are all so true to life that I was instantly hooked. Each sibling is so humanly written, with elements of good and bad, that you’re not sure whether you like them or not but you definitely relate.

Gili Teak Boutique Resort, Gili T. Review

I’m usually very much a budget traveller – I’m happy enough to be in the sun and not working. But I do love a good hotel (read my hotel reviews HERE). So while in Indonesia this year I thought I’d treat my boyfriend and I to a chi chi place in Gili Trawangan.

My friends Grace and Sean put me on to this place, so thanks guys. Gili Teak resort is on the quite side of Gili T. – and island known for its parties and as the rowdier sister to Gili Air and Gili Meno. I love Gili T. and the fact it’s busy and you can party on a night, but there is a quiet part, so you get the best of both worlds.

After getting off the boat from Bali, the heavens opened and there was a huuuuge tropical thunderstorm, which made the 20 minute walk to the hotel from the boat more like 40 minutes. And I was terrified I was going to get struck by lightening – not to mention every single thing on our bags got soaked and we had to walk through 3 foot of water. Luckily on the other side was Gili Teak – we we so impressed when we got there and had super-hot showers then sheltered from the storm in their fluffy towels and ordered room service (I had the Beef Randang – delicious).

Graet bathroom for selfies…

The bathroom in our bungalow was the best bathroom ever – his ‘n’ hers waterfall showers, and indoor pond with loads of little fish and coy carp (who we named Oliver, Theresa and ‘The Others’), two stone sinks, creeping vines and an open roof. I was literally amazing. I’ve never been so clean as I spent most of my time living it up in there!

The room itself was equipped with an XL King bed that was a dream to sleep on, desk, reading nook, fridge freezer, TV with loads of channels and TiVo. Outside we had a deck with a coffee table, comfy chairs and parking for two bikes.

The hotel itself had a great pool and sun loungers, really attentive staff and did the best breakfast – like, honestly so good I woke up early because I was excited to eat it. Next door is a great Caribbean restaurant and the beach directly opposite is a wonderful place to swim of watch the sunset.

Gili Teak cost around £60 a night for two people including breakfast and was worth every penny. I highly recommend it.

Just Sauced Lula Bikini Review

After the first time I went to Bali, for a month, I realised that 90% of my time there was spent in a bikini. And as I only had a couple with me, it was basically the same bikini. So in all my photos I’m wearing the same one. Epic fail. So this time around I wasn’t going to be caught out. I wanted some sassy swimwear that no one else would have (always a risk if you head straight to Topshop).

Enter Just Sauced, and independent swimwear label that I found on the ‘gram. Based in London, they make extra sexy bikinis and one pieces that draw inspiration from the 80s, Brazil and all things tropical.

I chose the Lula, and OTT string triangle bikini with baby-pink ruffles, leopard print and really flattering cut. It’s very small, so not for the faint-hearted. But I often think, if you’re gonna show some skin, then commit to it.

Anyway, check out their amazing range of ‘kinis for your next beach holiday.

The Cool Canggu Travel Guide

My first time in Canggu [pronounced chan-goo], Bali was such a blast. You know when you arrive somewhere and just instantly love the vibe. It’s definitely a more western part of Bali, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – especially when the western bits are all the good parts I like from back home. There a surfer vibe, of course, being that the beach is supposedly home to some of the raddest waves (am I using that term correctly?) in Indonesia. Also there are lots of super cool clubs and bars to party at. Overall the vibe is super-chilled but there’s loads to go as well.

GETTING AROUND

Canggu is a little more spread out than some places in Bali, so travelling on foot, especially at night isn’t a good option – like most of Bali, there are no sidewalks. Renting a scooter is the best option, you can usually do this for £2-4 a day, and petrol is a pittance (£1-2 a week). The taxis here are good too – reliable and really cheap, so if you don’t want to ride a bike you can still get around.

WHERE TO STAY

I stayed at Easy Surf Dascha which was a 3 minute walk form Echo beach and a lovely kooky place with unique private bungalows and a dorm room as well. It is set by a river and some of the rooms overlook this and there’s a beautiful communal pool and gardens. The room I had was fantastic – a princess bed, pink curtains and the biggest bathroom with a really deep bath (not a given when you’re travelling). A dorm room cost £10 a night and a private bungalow cost £30 a night. You can also easily rent bikes here and the free breakfast was pretty good.

WHERE TO EAT

On Echo beach there is a whole row of beach bars and cafes and I had my first Poke bowl down here. Raw fish, edamame, onion, sesame – very tasty indeed. If you, like me, are a fan of a smoothie bowl then in Canggu you’re spoiled for choice. Nalu Bowls does a great one – it’s a little pricey though. My favourite was Café Organic (read my review HERE).

WHERE TO DRINK

There are so many cool bars in Canggu that it’s hard to choose, and I didn’t get chance to visit them all. But Old Man’s is a very happening place, just by Canggu beach – I couldn’t believe how busy it was – and it was a good mix of locals, ex-pats, surfers and tourists. If you’re single and looking to mingle, then this is a great place to do so. You can also drive 15 minute to La Laguna, a gypsy-themed place with decorative caravans. A special mention must go to Pretty Poison – one of the coolest bars ever, complete with skate bowl and pop-up tattoo parlour (read my review HERE).

WHAT TO DO

My boyfriend and I tried our hand at surfing on Echo beach – which has black sand. This was super fun but beware, the waves are so big! I couldn’t complete the full 2 hour session as I chickened out after getting sucked under a wave. But it’s definitely something to try (though paddle-boarding is definitely more my speed).

Overall, I LOVED Canggu, it’s a really nice pace of life, very relaxed and chilled. But there are loads of things to do and lots of great beaches.

How to Choose a Bikini if You Have Dark Skin

This may seem like a frivolous subject but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bikini article dedicated to us brown ladies. If you’re buxom, slim, curvy, apple, pear, ginger… yes. But not black, brown or whatever.

My experience is that a black bikini doesn’t suit my skin tome at all – it just doesn’t pop. The brighter, the better – if you have dark skin then rejoice, because we can pull off a bright yellow, orange or pink bikini easily.

Bold patterns and prints also look amazing – basically, if you have dark skin you can wear most things – especially notoriously difficult shades like white. If your skin is pale that’ll wash you out in no time but on a bronzed bod, it works.

Colours to stray away from are pastels – they’re just not flattering. Or anything too dark.

WHERE I BOUGHT MY BIKINIS

Leopard print – Missguided

Blue – ASOS

Pink frill – Just Sauced

Pink bandeau – Depop

Orange – New Look

Flower Arranging With Bloom &Wild

Flower arranging is the new hot hobby, seriously. So many of my girlfriends are forgoing wild weekends in favour of artfully arranging blooms. And I can see why. It’s an activity that is so relaxing it’s like meditation, plus it kind of involves nature (though the stems are cut and dead) which is never a bad thing. I first tried this new thing last year and now I can’t get enough of it.

Bloom & Wild who you may know from ‘flowers through the letterbox’ fame hosted a class at West Elm’s beautiful Tottenham Court Road branch where we created a floral letter – which my friend pointed out was not dissimilar to something you’d see at an East End funeral. Morbid associations aside I am so proud of my colourful ‘S’.

Find out about Bloom & Wild classes here.

Stuck in The Noughties: Why We’re All Nostalgic for The 2000s

I recently had a mammoth ‘gram sesh which segued into a good few hours on Twitter and Tumblr… and I realised while in this internet-trance that a good proportion of what I was looking at was 00s nostalgia. My favourite accounts @Popculturediedin2009, @Shesvague and @partylikeits07 are all in the business of posting photos from the most iconic celebrities of the early 2000s. I’m not interested in what Emma Stone is up to today, I want to know which club Tara Reid fell out of in 2003, or the legendary feud between Paris and Lindsay ‘Firecrotch’ Lohan.

A quick poll of my friends shows that, they too, are all obsessed with the celebs of yesteryear. But why? Why are we all living so defiantly in the past? Well, firstly, these are the images of our formative years – we all came of age in the millennium – so Nicole, Paris, Micha and Hilary were our teen queen idols. And they ran things. Heat magazine was at its zenith and tabloid journalism was reaching new highs/lows never to be seen again. The celebs of today are way too savvy for too much scandal, I mean, look at Selena Gomez and Zac Efron – both willingy went into rehab with little fanfare and seem to be on the straight and narrow. Compare that with Lindsay Lohan’s repeated stints in rehabilitation facilities, stints that resulted in nothing more than more column inches( you can not tell me LL is sober).

paris-hilton-lindsay-lohan-kitson-zoom-587de1b7-c891-4346-9661-d605538f7006

These girls were salacious, young, rich and bad. DUIs and jail sentences were the norm, alongside eating disorders and drug abuse – and yet with the help of super-stylist Rachel Zoe millions of tweens idolised bad girls like Lohan and Hilton. Their impact on fashion at the time was revelatory, put the right tee on the right girl and it would sell out in an instant. Remember this is pre-Instagram, so their levels of power and influence were pretty astounding.

Perhaps another reason why we’re all clamouring to relive these halcyon days is because a lot of this coverage we never even saw at the time, unless you happened to pick up the exact copy of whatever magazine published that story. There was no internet to see images of your faves on demand, so now we get to go over that period with a fine tooth comb thanks to the sleuths like @popculturediedin2009 who are unearthing all this fire from 2007. It seems rude not to pay attention.

Of course any form of nostalgic past-time is a symptom of a refusal to grow the f*ck up. I hold my hands up, I’m in a prolonged state of adolescence and I want my free time activities to reflect that. If I can’t get a mortgage, then no way am I going to act like a real adult. So tabloid tales of Speidi, LC and Mischa Barton rehashed is where I’m at right now. And I’m okay with that.
